Our medical underwriter AXA has just upgraded its SmartCare Optimum Plus medical plans effective 1 July, 2021. Here are the 6 new benefits:

1. You are Covered for Psychiatric Treatment

Coverage of up to RM3,000 per annum for inpatient/outpatient treatment for the following psychiatric disorders:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Polyphagia (compulsive over-eating)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Anxiety
  •

    2. Pacemaker and Defibrillator Implants

Your heart might require assistance from a pacemaker implant to help it beat regularly or a defibrillator implant to deliver electrical shocks if life threatening rhythms are detected. These implants aren’t cheap. Our upgraded plans now cover RM20,000 towards the cost of these implants, over and above your surgery and hospitalisation costs.

    3. Cataracts - Your Intraocular Lens are Now Covered

Intraocular lenses are needed to replace your natural eye lens if you suffer from cataracts, which if untreated, might lead to blindness. The upgraded AXA plans now cover up to RM1,000 towards the cost of your intraocular lens per eye.

    4. Upgrade Your Room and Board Without Fuss

We found it odd that in many medical insurance policies, including admittedly AXA’s before 1 July 2021, if you choose to upgrade your room upon admission, you cannot just simply pay for the difference. You also had to co-pay 20% of the whole hospital bill. “What?” we hear you exclaim. We agree

Good news. For all plans bought from 1st July 2021 onwards, if you want to upgrade your room and board, just tell the hospital admissions staff that you wish to do so. You will then just be charged the difference with what you are entitled to under your chosen policy. So if you choose a policy with a twin bedded room entitlement, listed at RM180 a day, and at admission you opt for a single room that the hospital charges at RM300 a day, you will only need to pay the difference of RM120 per day.

    5. Health Rewards Wellness Programme

The best outcome of all is that you remain healthy and well. So to help you do this, AXA has an app, Fit+ Health, that not only helps you track your personal health and reminds you about your medications, but also rewards you for staying active. For example, for every 500 points earned, you can convert them to a RM5 cash voucher to redeem from participating merchants (at time of writing, participating merchants include Grab, Lazada and Domino’s Pizza).

    6. 15% Premium Discount if You Opt for Pay and Claim

We know that most people prefer to get an e-medical card so they can get cashless admission into the hospital. But if you have the funds to be able to pay your hospital bills first, why not get a premium discount?

If you opt for the pay and claim option, you’ll get a 15% discount on your premiums. With this option, you’ll need to pay your hospital bill first, and then claim to get reimbursed from AXA afterward. No pressure, it’s your choice.

And Finally, for All Medical Policyholders

We just wanted to let all AXA policyholders, whether they bought AXA’s upgraded plans or the earlier ones, know that AXA has added a few more popular Kuala Lumpur hospitals to its panel hospital list, including Prince Court, Pantai Hospital, UM Specialist Centre, Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara, Gleneagles Hospital and Ara Damansara Medical Centre.
